The hardware is identical — 12 GE SFP ports, 68 Gbps switching capacity, and 350W AC power supply. The difference is software: the IP Services feature set on the -E model unlocks advanced Layer 3 protocols including BGP, full OSPF/EIGRP support, NetFlow, and MPLS, which are not available on the IP Base (-S) model. If your environment requires only basic routing, IP Base is sufficient; for full enterprise routing, IP Services is the correct choice.
Yes. The WS-C3850-12S-E supports Cisco StackWise-480, allowing up to 9 switches to be stacked with a combined bandwidth of 480 Gbps and managed as a single logical unit. Note that IP Services switches can only stack with other IP Services switches — mixed feature-set stacking is not supported.
