The primary difference is the software feature set. The -E suffix denotes the IP Services feature set, which adds full Layer 3 routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, IS-IS, VRF-Lite, PIM multicast, Policy-Based Routing, and more) on top of the IP Base feature set included on the -S model. Note that IP Services units can only stack with other Catalyst 3850 IP Services switches, not IP Base models.

The WS-C3850-24XS-E includes one expansion module slot that accepts optional Cisco network modules: the C3850-NM-4-10G (4 x 10G SFP+), C3850-NM-8-10G (8 x 10G SFP+), or C3850-NM-2-40G (2 x 40G QSFP+). Note that the C3850-NM-4-1G and C3850-NM-2-10G modules are not supported on this 24-port SFP+ model per Cisco's compatibility matrix.
