This refurbished Cisco NIM-16A is a 16-port asynchronous serial Network Interface Module designed for the Cisco ISR 4000 Series. Professionally tested and reset to factory defaults, this module gives enterprise network teams a cost-effective path to expanding terminal server capacity on their existing ISR 4000 infrastructure without compromising reliability or performance.The NIM-16A plugs directly into any NIM slot on all Cisco 4000 Series ISR platforms and enables the router to function as a terminal server, providing out-of-band console access to remote network and server devices across a LAN or WAN. The module supports RS-232 asynchronous serial interfaces and connects to downstream devices via standard Octal cables (CAB-HD8-ASYNC or CAB-ASYNC-8). Cisco IOS Software automatically creates the async interfaces upon module insertion, and the recommended connection rate is 9600 baud, with higher rates supported for low simultaneous connection counts.

The NIM-16A uses standard Octal cables — specifically CAB-HD8-ASYNC (the previous-generation cable) or the newer CAB-ASYNC-8. Both cable types are compatible with both sockets on the NIM-16A. Octal cables fan out from a single high-density connector into eight individual RJ-45 connectors, providing connectivity for up to eight devices per cable.
No. The NIM-16A is specifically designed for terminal server use only. Cisco IOS Software does not support SLIP or PPP on this module, and asynchronous routing and data encapsulation features are not available. It is purpose-built for out-of-band console management.
