Both cards are functionally equivalent 4-port 100GbE line cards for the ASR 9000 platform, but they differ in configuration scale and buffer capacity. The TR (Transport Optimized) variant is designed for deployments requiring basic QoS and high forwarding efficiency, while the SE (Service Edge Optimized) variant provides enhanced QoS depth suited to customer-facing edge deployments.
The A9K-4X100GE-TR requires Cisco CPAK pluggable optics — it does not accept standard QSFP28 transceivers. Supported CPAK options include CPAK-100G-LR4 (SMF, 10 km), CPAK-100G-SR10 and CPAK-100G-SR4 (MMF), CPAK-100G-ER4L (SMF, 25 km), and CPAK-10X10G-LR for 10x10GbE breakout over SMF. Optics are sold separately and are not included with the line card.
